Diarrhoea is a symptom of a disease state (diarrhoea is not a illness but rather a consequence of another illness) It is characterised by the frequent evacuation of liquid stools. The aim of treatment is to work out was caused the diarrhoea and remove the cause and then manage the fluid and electrolyte replacement.
There are 3 main types of diarrhoea
- Watery diarrhoea occurs when the amount of water and electrolytes moving into the intestinal mucosa exceeds the amount absorbed into the bloodstream. Watery secretory diarrhoea is a sign of bacterial enterotoxins and viruses.
- Fatty diarrhoea, or steatorrhea, usually accompanies conditions associated with malabsorption, such as chronic pancreatitis or short-bowel syndrome.
- Small-volume diarrhoea may accompany diverticulosis of the colon.
In Adults: Replacement of fluids and electrolytes by increasing the oral intake of fluids, particularly those high in sodium and potassium. When the diarrhoea stops it is best to start oral diet with starches and followed by protein foods.
