Diverticular Disease, Diverticulosis and Diverticulitis
Diverticular disease is a condition where the lining of the large bowel (colon) form pockets known as diverticulum and cause symptoms.
Diverticulosis is the where the diverticulum are present, but the person suffers no symptoms (asypmtomatic). Diverticulitis occurs when the diverticulum become inflamed.
The diverticulum may be present from birth or form for various reasons. A diet low in fibre is considered a major cause as this leads to constipation and therefore straining when opening your bowels. It is believed that the straining results in the formation of diverticulum.
Treatment of diverticular disease is a diet with adequate in fibre and fluid to reduce the necessity in straining to pass faeces, anti spasmodic medication may also be prescribed. Occasionally surgery is necessary.
An Eatatease Dietitian may be able to relieve the symptoms. A Dietitian can provide an appropriate diet which may help relieve symptoms, whilst ensuring nutritional adequacy. If you haven't already you should an e-consultation, for a comprehensive dietary review to be undertaken by a UK registered Dietitian.
