A difficulty in swallowing (Dysphagia) is common in patients with a neurological disease, such as the after effects of a stroke.
Symptoms vary from person to person, it may include: drooling, choking, coughing, inability to suck from a straw, pocketing food in the mouth, no gag reflux, respiratory infections, and weight loss.
Swallowing needs to be assessed by a speech and language therapist (SLT). Texture of the food and liquids will be determined by the SLT.
Your dietary intake may be semisolid, mashed or pureed. One of the most important factors in people suffering dysphagia is providing a nutritionally adequate diet.
