How do you get active? Start small, if you haven’t been active for a while take it easy, set goals you can achieve, especially ones that will fit into your lifestyle.
Don’t assume that ‘exercise’ means that you need to go for a ten mile run on a weekend, try some gardening, go for light walk or even climb the stairs a couple of extra times a day, it all counts.
I don’t do any exercise at all…do I? You might be surprised, you may already be on the way to a healthy level of activity. Look at the exercise targets section of the website, plan the number of minutes you spend walking, climbing the stairs, doing the housework or gardening. Add all the minutes together and start to set yourself some simple target to build a steady improvement in your level of activity.
Okay...I’m going to do a little exercise, am I really going to benefit it? Everyone benefits from increasing their activity, it doesn’t matter about your age, size or fitness. You are never too old or too unfit to start. The greatest benefit will in fact be for inactive people who start to take regular exercise, so there’s never a bad time to start.
Remember, don’t worry about climbing Everest, try the stairs and work on it from there.
