  Gout

Gout occurs when the levels of uric acid become too high.

Your body forms uric acid as a breakdown product of various chemical processes and normally the body gets rid of any excess through the kidneys into the urine, if uric acid builds up and forms crystals in the joints it makes them feel painful.

Dietary Treatment

Gout sufferers may get some benefit from avoiding certain foods that breakdown to cause high levels of uric acid in the body if drug treatment is not controlling symptoms effectively.

Excessive alcohol consumption may not cause gout but it can bring on an attack, keep to recommended drinking limits 3-4 units per day for a man and 2-3 units for a woman.

If you are overweight, aim to lose 1-2lbs per week as this may help to reduce the uric levels in the blood. It is important that you avoid periods of strict dieting as this may start an attack.

Drink plenty of fluid, aim for 2 to 3 litres per day.
