  Heartburn and Indigestion

Heartburn the medical term for heartburn is gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Reflux occurs when stomach contents escape into the food pipe (oesophaugus), producing a burning sensation. The burning sensation is caused by acid and enzymes produced to break down food in the stomach, causing damage to the tissue of the oesophagus.

Causes of heartburn include obesity, previous surgery of the stomach and/or oesophagus, pregnancy, a hiatus hernia or poor dietary habits.

Following healthy eating guidelines and postural changes may help reduce the symptoms of heartburn.

Medication may be recommended or prescribed by your doctor to help reduce the symptoms.

Indigestion
Indigestion may be caused by poor dietary eating habits, particularly an unhealthy diet and irregular meals, especially if rushed.

The symptoms tend to be discomfort and feeling uncomfortably full following food. Healthy changes to your diet and lifestyle are usually sufficient to significantly reduce the symptoms of indigestion.

In some cases regular symptoms of indigestion may be due to a more serious condition, therefore it may be advisable to consult a doctor, particularly if it has been associated with weight loss or you continue to have symptoms despite having a healthy diet & lifestyle.
