A hiatus hernia occurs when part of the stomach slips through a torn (herniated) hole in the diaphragm, which is there to allow the oesophagus (food pipe) to pass through the diaphragm.
Hiatus hernia symptoms may include the feeling that food is sticking in the oesophagus and/or pain and discomfort may be caused by reflux and oesophagitis (inflammation of the food pipe).
The course of treatment would depend on the amount of stomach that is displaced and the resultant symptoms.
If symptoms are severe enough, a surgical procedure may be undertaken to pull the stomach back to it’s original position and the tear in the diaphragm mended. If you're overweight it's beneficial to lose weight prior to surgery for hiatus hernia. If you are underweight it is important to gain weight or at least reduce further weight loss.
