How much weight should I lose?Ideally it is best to aim for a steady weight loss of 1-2kg a week.
If you lose weight any faster than this you will be losing your lean body tissue from your muscles and organs rather than losing fat.
During the first two weeks of a diet you’ll usually find that you have extra weight loss. This weight loss is mainly due to body fluids and glycogen (mixture of glucose and body fluids). After the first couple of weeks your weightloss should balance out to regular amount per week.
Generally we would advise as a guideline after the first initial weeks that if you have a BMI of over 30, you could realistically expect to lose up to 2kg per week.
If you have a BMI of over 25-30 you should aim for about 1 kg per week, however the nearer you get to your healthy BMI balance the harder it will become to lose weight.
Remember!
You didn’t put your weight on overnight, so don’t try to lose it overnight! Even if you don’t manage to meet your ideal weekly weight loss, whatever you lose is great. Every step in the right direction is one to proud of, don’t undersell your efforts and hard work, and just keep at it.
