Poor wound healing (Tissue Viability), good tissue viability is important if a wound is to heal. The wound may be due to an accident, surgery or chronic sore such as a leg ulcer or pressure sore.
Factors such as correct dressings and rotation on pressure points are important, however nutrition also has an important role in the optimal healing of wounds.
A balanced diet is necessary to ensure an adequate (not excessive) supply of the nutrients involved in wound healing.
It may be difficult to achieve an adequate diet. This is because nutritional requirements are often raised for wound healing. Furthermore, due to a number of reasons you may be eating less than usual or not absorbing all the nutrients from the food you eat (eg. diarrhoea).
Possibly you have a pre-existing condition such as diabetes or Coeliac Disease which you have dietary restrictions to consider.
How can an Eatatease Dietitian help? A dietary assessment could enable suggestions to be made that would help you optimise dietary intake to aid wound healing. An e-consultation allows you to have a personal, comprehensive dietary assessment undertaken by a UK registered Dietitian.
