Renal disease

Our Kidneys carry out a very important job in the body, they work to keep a homestatic (normal) balance in the body. The Kidneys are responsible for removing toxins from our blood and dispose of them through urine.

Each kidney consists of approximately 1 million functioning units called nephrons. Nephrons all function independently contributing to the final urine production.

There are 6 types of renal disease, all related to the portion of the nephron most affected.
These include nephrotic syndrome, nephritic syndrome, acute renal failure (ARF), tubular defects, renal stones and end stage renal disease (ESRD).

The main consequence of renal disease is a disordered fluid and electrolyte balance, causing an accumulation of metabolic waste products.

Dietary restrictions depend on what type of renal disease you have.

Dietary restrictions may include:

  • SODIUM
  • FLUID
  • PROTEIN
  • POTASSIUM
  • PHOSPHOROUS
