  Renal stones

Renal (kidney) stones can form anywhere within the urinary tract, within the kidney, within the urethra (the tube draining urine from the kidney), or in the bladder. Renal stones may be many sizes and shapes. They may be tiny microscopic crystals to stones as large as potatoes.

Renal stones can be very painful. Symptoms range from dull loin pain if the stone is in the renal pelvis to agonizing colic if lodged in urethra.

There are 4 main types of renal stones classified according to chemical constituents; calcium stone, uric acid stone, 'infection' stone, cystine stone. The most common types of renal stones are calcium.

Renal stones are most common in males, in 30-60 year old age group. They are more common in those living in the warmer climate.

The aims of treatment are to improve symptoms, deal with any complications, remove stones that don't pass spontaneously and prevent further stones forming.

How to keep renal stones at bay:

  • Drink plenty of water, aim for 2 litres of fluid a day.
  • Eat a healthy diet that is rich in calcium, but avoid taking calcium supplements.
  • Limit salt intake.
  • Eat a diet rich in fruit and vegetables.
  • If stones are due to oxalate, you need to look at foods that are high in oxalate.
